This weekend sees London Welsh take on Exeter Chiefs in a match that is set to further prolong the wait for the Oxford clubs first win of the season. You heard me right, it’s March and Welsh are still seeking that first elusive win.

It’s fun to witness a team on a bad run; but I almost feel bad watching London Welsh this season. World cup winning scrum-half, Piri Weepu, was quick to sign up for Welsh at the start of the year; one must think he simply got bored of beating English teams, as this year he has been subject to the worst professional season of his career.

The year makes grim reading for London Welsh fans; no wins in 16 attempts, a points difference of -583 and only a single losing bonus point to show for their troubles. London Welsh were promoted from the paddling pool of the Championship to the wave pool of the Premiership and have found themselves completely out of depth.

After the 50-12 humbling at the hands of fellow strugglers London Irish, London Welsh assistant coach Ollie Smith said: “It’s been a disastrous season and we’ve not achieved what we wanted but we are not giving up.”

Although no team should ever give up its pursuit of glory, in Welsh’s case it’s admirable they are still turning up. Despite six games remaining, Welsh already have the worst points record in history; by a margin of 76 points.

Over 10 years ago Rotherham became the first team in Premiership history to go the entire season without a win; a record that still stands today, ending the season with a meagre three points.

With remaining fixtures against Northampton Saints, Saracens and Bath, London Welsh’s end to the season doesn’t get any easier. With this incredibly difficult run-in of fixtures, it appears likely that London Welsh will break the -600 points difference barrier; dethroning Rotherham as the worst team in Premiership history in the process.
