Rory McIlroy endured a turbulent day on his PGA Tour return at the Honda Classic in Florida as he fails to remember how the game is scored, ending the round second from bottom.

After a brief hiatus from the sport, McIlroy appeared to have forgotten the rules of the sport by attempting as many shots as possible for the majority of the day. Following a disastrous opening five holes, the world number one was seen whispering to fellow golfers who appeared to nod, giving thumbs up, with big grins on their faces.

It seems McIlroy was under the illusion that the player with the most shots at the end of the day would be crowned the winner. As the game went on, he appeared concerned at the constant sniggers from the field, before eventually approaching a veteran fan and asking him what he was doing wrong.

At this point he clapped a hand to his head, with a look of horror on his face, before returning to the field and registering two birdies on the last two holes.

“I’ll be totally honest,” he said to our reporters after the day had finished, “I’ve been away for a while and I’d totally forgotten how to score.”

“The other golfers told me I was doing it right and I assumed they were laughing at somebody behind me. I was horrified to learn of my mistake! Luckily I managed to end the day with a couple of birdies to keep me in the game.”

“There will be no more mistakes now! I have learnt my lesson. I have also been advised to aim for the rough a little more tomorrow as apparently this helps prepare the next shot? It’s not something I would normally try but as I’m a little rusty, it’s perhaps worth a shot!”

The Honda Classic continues tomorrow.
