Lancaster’s potential World Cup nightmare

I’ve always been told I’m a pessimist. Whether it be watching my team Northampton Saints or simply talking about anything sporting; I am always the one keeping reality in check.

Before England had even played a game in this year’s Six Nations, the word on everyone’s lips was preparation. Preparation for this year’s World Cup on home soil and the immense pressure that comes with it.

However after England’s triumphant victory over Wales, England’s rugby fans immediately changed their chime. English fans took on the form of their footballing counterparts and all of a sudden if you didn’t believe England were going to win the World Cup you weren’t really supporting the red rose.

Believe it or not, I myself was one of the latter and this article will lay out the worst fate that could fall upon Stuart Lancaster and his team of egg-chasers. And if it indeed does go wrong, Stuart Lancaster has already began preparing for life after England.

“Yeah I mean I’d be silly not to have a back-up plan. I want to win this World cup but I have been down the job centre just to see what’s on offer. I believe a man with my skill set should have no problems finding employment should myself and England part ways.”

Now although it is not difficult, England’s rugby team have a higher reputation than their footballing opposites; they have never failed to make it out of their group at World Cups and have even won the tournament before. However is that about to change?

If England are to lose to both Australia and Wales in our group; we would be all but out, resulting in Lancaster getting the sack and having to wait at the back of the line as his dream job is allocated to someone else.

Look at Martin Johnson. He endured a miserable World Cup with England in 2011; lost his job and slithered of into the wilderness of rugby’s corporate side.

Johnson hasn’t secured another job within rugby since, and he captained us to World Cup victory! If Johnno can’t find another job within the game, I fear for Lancaster.

Time to dust off that old P45 Stuart.
