Sports quotes

The game of football has been blessed by God’s right hand himself: Pope John Paul II, who once said:

“Amongst all unimportant subjects, football is by far the most important.”

Former ITV pundit Adrian Chiles was always full of perceptive comments:

“Steven Gerrard has never lost a game in which he’s scored a last minute winner.”

Some things just aren’t that complicated. The icon Muhammad Ali reflected on how it was to be a boxer:

“It’s just a job. Grass grows, birds fly, waves pound the sand. I beat people up.”

Sometimes the things you intend to say just doesn’t come out right. Rugby pundit Murray Mexted wasn’t particularly lucky with this analysis.

“You don’t like to see hookers going down on players like that.”

When asked on Top Gear whether he’d ever been tempted to punch Sebastian Vettel, Mark Webber had the perfect response.

“My Dad always said you shouldn’t hit boys mate.”
