McLaren back-up driver Kevin Magnussen has revealed he was slightly relieved to watch Fernando Alonso crash in Catalunya last weekend.

While publicly tweeting: ‘nice to see Fernando leaving the hospital’, he has revealed to our reporters that he was secretly quite pleased to see Alonso hit the barriers.

“Of course I am glad he is ok,” he started, “But I have never been more pleased to see anybody crash out. With him out of the way, I now get my chance to race again. I’ve been bored stiff waiting in the garage. Maybe he took pity on me and deliberately binned it? Who knows?”

When asked whether he was disappointed with losing his seat to the veteran Spaniard, he offered a grimace and a raise of the eyebrow.

“Of course I’m disappointed. I’m a far better driver than Alonso and everybody knows it. He only gets the nod because he’s, well, older. Respect your elders and all that.”

The mysterious circumstances regarding the accident and Alonso’s extended stay in hospital has raised questions about whether McClaren are being completely open about the incident.

When we asked Magnussen about whether he had anything to do with the incident, he responded with a stone-cold poker face and refused to be drawn into the matter.

“Like I said, it’s nice to get a drive for a change. But I’m glad Fernando is ok.”

Rumours are already starting that McClaren have banned Magnussen from coming within ten yards of Alonso before the season starts again on March 15th. With questions marks over whether he will recover in time, Alonso could be forced to hand back the drive to Magnussen for the opening weekend. Could Magnussen take team-rivalry to the next level by deliberately sabotaging his new team-mate? We may never know for sure.
