You’re not having Bale declare Welsh FA

The Football Association of Wales (FAW) has responded with outrage over the FA’s suggestion of a home nations Team GB at the Rio 2016 Olympics.

Despite a joint team in the London 2012 Olympics, the move was strongly discouraged by the FAW, the Scottish FA and the Irish FA, who were worried about the long-term effects on their individual memberships of FIFA. The FAW has now, however, explained why they are really against the move.

“They want Gareth Bale,” said an FAW spokesperson. “It’s England’s response to a sport they are particularly bad at. They’ve done it with Andy Murray already and they’ll do it with Gareth Bale.”

“Let’s face the truth. The England football team will never win a major tournament without our help. And why on earth would we want to help the country that spends their tax-payer’s money on our infrastructure? I’d rather all the home nations fail than a joint team succeeds. Some may call that short-sighted but we at the FAW call it standing up for oneself.”

“England seems to want to continue their age-old method of bullying others to get what they want. Well, the red dragon of Wales will respond with fire.”

The FA said they were disappointed with the response.

“The Welsh FA fail to recognise the success we could enjoy as a united Team GB,” said a briefly drawn-up FA statement. “With Gareth Bale and Aaron Ramsey, we could finally have a team worthy to compete in a major tournament – not just the Olympics but beyond.”

“We ask our neighbours to reconsider their stance and offer us the services of their best players.”

England fans will be disappointed to hear that another move to bring some of Great Britain’s best football players together has broken down. Gareth Bale could be the missing link in a team that has been criticised since finishing bottom of their group at the 2014 World Cup but the move looks set to fail again. While the Scottish and Irish FA are yet to comment on the move, it seems likely they will agree with their allies at the FAW.
