Sportswear manufacturer Nike have announced they are recalling the Nike Hypervenom boots after football star Wayne Rooney failed to stay on his feet against Preston.
After a crisis meeting this week the sportswear giant Nike has decided to stop selling the Nike Hypervenom boots, which among others are worn by football star Wayne Rooney.
The decision came after the England striker failed to recover his balance after tripping inside Preston North End’s penalty box, which ultimately earned his team a penalty.
The England forward quickly apologised for the incident, but CEO at Nike, Mark Parker, claims the company can no longer keep the boots on the market.
“Even though our sportswear looks good, we cannot sell equipment that can’t keep players on their feet.
“If our gear leads to incidents like this we cannot sell them, in respect of the fans, the referees and the managers,” he stated.
Earlier today the game’s referee, Phil Dowd, confirmed he has had a meeting with some of the top referee experts in the country to discuss the incident.
The Referee Judging Committee, consisting of life-long season ticket holders at various clubs around the country, spent hours looking at Vine footage they had found on Facebook to analyse whether Rooney was tripped or not.
Michael Brown, 53, who is recognized as a reliable refereeing expert in the stands at Craven Cottage, believes this matter is a tough one to decide. Even though he has watched over a thousand games at Fulham’s stadium he finds the incident fascinating.
“I would say it’s an extraordinary case. After looking at footage of the incident we can clearly see that Stuckmann, the goalkeeper, does not touch him at all.
“At the same time, there is no doubt that Wayne went down, so the Football Association’s rules clearly states that it is a penalty,” Fulham’s season ticket holder argues.
